When you need a wedding photographer to capture the events on your special day, there are some very important factors that need to be considered before you choose your photographic artist.

The search for a wedding photographer demands the same high standards that shopping for a wedding ring or looking for a reception venue require.

We have included some important points that you should consider when selecting a photographer for your wedding.

Begin Your Search Early

As soon as you've decided on a date for your wedding, the next step should be searching for a wedding photographer. Wedding photographers are typically booked from a minimum of six months to one or two years in advance, especially the most reputable ones. Photographers only book one wedding on a given day so securing your day early ensures that you will be able to hire the person you want. You can ask for referrals from family and friends.

Do Not Settle

Your wedding demands the highest quality service and dedication from a wedding photographer. Make sure you choose a reputable and professional wedding photo expert. Viewing their portfolios will give you an idea of what your day will look like.  Each photographer has a specific style to their portraiture, finding the person that not only feels right, but can capture the moments of your special day is key. Just as important as viewing their portfolio of images, you have to get along with your photographer. He/she has to have a balance of blending in to the crowd when shooting candids and stepping up to take charge with the family portraits. View Portfolios

Check out the photographers wedding portfolio, the proof of a wedding specialist's expertise lies in the quality of his previous work. Also, make sure that the wedding photographer whose portfolio you are browsing will be the one who will take your wedding photos. It's ok to meet with a representative and not the actual photographer, just make sure the work you are viewing is that of the person who will be shooting your wedding. Plan an Engagement/Lifestyle Photo Session

The engagement/lifestyle session is a fun opportunity to have your portrait taken in a relaxed and casual way, that doesn’t involve a white dress and tuxedo.  It’s important to schedule this a minimum of six weeks before the big day to ensure there is enough time to make print enlargements, photo guest signing books or signing mats ready to be on display at your reception. More than just a cool photo shoot, engagement sessions are an excellent opportunity for the couple to get a sense of what the wedding day will be like.

The Contract

As soon as you agree on the photo package, arrangements and other important details, make sure you put it all in writing. A contract helps protect both you and the wedding photographer. If your wedding photographer does not have a contract, insist on having one, or you may have to look for another photographer.

Find Out What They Will Wear

On your special day, your wedding photographer must be suitably dressed for the occasion. The objective is to make them blend in as much as possible, so as to not distract the attendees from the wedding itself. A professional wedding photographer will make it a point to be the first on scene, whether it's the bride or the groom's house, the wedding venue or the reception venue. Your wedding photographer may have an assistant with them; make sure that they are also dressed appropriately and briefed thoroughly about the wedding photo requirements.

Seeing the End Result

Under normal circumstances you should be able to view your proofs or online gallery of images from the special day within 4 weeks after the event.  Wedding photographers take this time to edit the number of photos down, color correct them, retouch and otherwise get them ready for viewing.
